An alcoholic is someone that is highly dependent on alcohol. Alcoholism is the incapability to control the amount of alcohol that is taken at any given time. Alcohol abuse happens when there are unhealthy drinking habits such as drinking too much in one sitting or drinking to an excess daily. Doing this every day eventually leads to dependency. Since it’s become habitual, like any other habit it becomes hard to break away from the cycle.
There are signs that you should be aware of when it comes to alcoholism. An alcoholic will; have problems at work, they will be less energetic than their colleagues, they will have random blackouts and worst case scenario, they will start hurting other people Having a desire for alcohol and getting withdrawal systems is another sign of alcohol dependency. Withdrawal takes place when an alcoholic chooses to stop drinking. Withdrawal symptoms include sweating, nausea or anxiety. If the above symptoms are a little close to home, then you or the person facing them needs to see a doctor.
A step in the right direction is accepting your situation and accepting that you need to sober up. You need to want it so that you don’t go back to your sad habits halfway through the recovery.
If you have any alcoholic drinks in your house, you will have to throw them out, remember ‘ out of site out of mind’. Choose being sober be your life project, think of it as a matter of life or death stance.
Talk to your friends because they will be your backbone and strength throughout the journey. True friends will avoid putting you in compromising situations that can cause you to have a relapse..
Other than a home support group, you can take it a step further and join an AA meeting, where you can share stories with other people going through similar things that you are going through. This will give you strength and hope especially when you hear testimonies of people who were able to come out of their addiction.
Take notes of every good thing that has been happening around you after you decided o take on this journey. If you enjoy spending time with your family, note that down.
Eat healthy foods and exercise. Destructing yourself will take your mind away from the alcohol. Such small actions will have a great impact in your life and keep you going when you feel like you have hit a wall. You will get revitalized and re energized . There are various things that are waiting to be discovered, and you can use that time to find them. You can join a clay moulding class, poetry sharing, maybe take some photography lesson. Don’t allow yourself to be idle.
